A LIFE FORCE

“A LIFE FORCE”

There is a vitality, a life force,

a quickening that is translated through you into action,

And because there is only one of you in all time,

this expression is unique.

And if you block it, it will never exist though any other medium and (will) be lost.

The world will not have it.

It is not your business to determine how good it is; Nor how valuable it is;

nor how it compares with other expressions.

It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.

You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work.

You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you.

Keep the channel open.

No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction at anytime.

There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction,

a blessed unrest keeps us marching and makes us more alive than others.

Some words

Posted by sam at January 23rd, 2005

Oh man it’s been a crazy week.  I started training at Nu Skin, have kept my first job in the mornings, and have been trying to keep up with school.

Last night was guitar night.  It was incredible.  We had, throughout the night, over three hundred people there.  I met some really cool people and had a great time, but man it was crowded!  I passed out flyers for the show next thursday (Which I will be posting online shortly).

The Nu Skin job seems like it will be pretty cool.  I will be working in the evenings doing tech support.  I think it will be pretty laid back and I will be able to do homework/reading/chillin like a villan.

Steve has been dating a new girl, McCall.  It’s pretty funny.  A few weeks ago I kept suggesting that we hang out with this girl and he kept saying “Nah man, she’s a total flake, don’t call her!”  Well, now he’s dating her - I guess I see why he didn’t want me calling her.

Now I was trying to take a nap because I worked all day, but the kid upstairs started in on his snare drum and now I can’t go back to sleep.  Oh well.  I wonder what I’m going to go do tonight?

A new jorb

Posted by sam at January 13th, 2005

I got a new job today at Nu Skin.  I will be working on the tech. support staff.  I think I will enjoy it.  I start next week.

Their training/orientation will be a pain in the ass because it conflicts with school.  Most of my teachers are cool with it, but I’m worried about Spanish.

Now I will be able to make enough money to buy a sweet ride.

Where is the fish?

Posted by sam at January 12th, 2005

Okay, so I guess everyone is having a hard time finding the fish in the picture I posted two entries ago.  I extend the challenge to everyone.  Try to find the fish.

A letter to parkway crossing

Posted by sam at January 11th, 2005

I was looking through some old emails I had sent, and came across the email to the management of parkway crossings apartment complex.  I thought it was pretty damn funny.  I have edited it slightly, to make it appropriate for a wider audience, and deleted expletives.

SUBJECT: Parking at Parkway
Dear sir,

I would like to let you know I received a $50 boot while parked in VISITOR parking at your apartment complex.  I have done this many times before without a problem, but now because of *a* new sign measuring roughly 10″x6″ at the far end of the parking lot I was faced with this problem as I was trying to leave.  There is no reason for this other than your desire to [expletive deleted] people over and take their money.  I hope word gets out about how you rape people for their money and I hope nobody wants to live there and that you guys go out of business.
    Soon.
Serves you right for taking advantage of an already poor student population.    The University parking guy who came out said residents had been notified, yet not a single one of the residents in the apartment I was visiting had heard anything about it.  I’m glad that I could be treated so nicely as a Visitor to your [expletive]hole.  This new policy is really going to start making friends - people will flock to live in a place where they can’t have friends come visit!  Im surprised your not charging the people who live there with boots and extra fines - you already have them pinned down under contract!

I have summarized the reasons I would rather live in hell than parkway crossing in this neat, organized, bulleted list:

*management in hell loves it when you bring your friends
*Satan has no use for your money
*the heat of the furnaces of hell pale in comparison to the heat of my rage when I think about parkway crossing
   *no byu standards in hell
   *health benefits

Please make sure your overlord sees this email.  Im sure he won’t bat an eye, as he has already has taken my money.

[expletive] you,
   Sam Garfield

As you can see, I was pretty pissed.  The guy from parkway crossing wrote back, and actually sounded like a cool kid.

SUBJECT: Your email

Hello Sam, In response to your email (which, by the way, was rather entertaining), I’d like to clarify a few points in an attempt to direct any further scathing emails to the correct channels. For example, Parkway Crossing does not–in fact CAN NOT (by law)–receive ANY money for booting, towing or other traffic citations issued on our property. That is why, under direction from Orem City officials in advisement to adhere to strict city parking ordinances and fire code, we use University Parking to enforce proper parking regulations. When I say “proper parking regulations,” I don’t mean let’s (in your words), ‘rape people for their money.’ I mean, by law we have to provide a certain amount of parking spaces for our tenants. Visitor parking is secondary.

However, we know visitor parking is important and have provided the highest percentage of visitor parking allowed on our real estate. In fact, we recently paved an optional parking lot to add more visitor spaces at the south end of the property - a huge expense to us since it will be torn up and relocated in the future. Obviously, our loyalty is to our TENANTS, making sure they have a place to park their car since they are paying to live here. Secondary to that, we understand that visitors are going to come here and we certainly encourage that. That is why EVERY TENANT has received a very encouraging message on multiple UTILITY BILLS to PLEASE CHECK WITH MIDNIGHT SECURITY BEFORE HAVING YOUR FRIENDS PARK IF THE VISITOR SPOTS ARE FULL SO THEY CAN HELP VISITORS FIND A SPOT, ISSUE A TEMPORARY PERMIT, OR INSTRUCT UNIVERSITY PARKING NOT TO BOOT OR TOW.

Now, I’m assuming the lights were still on at the apartment you visited, which means your friends have paid their utilities, which means they’ve seen the utility bills, as well as numerous fliers placed on their doors, exit doors, and bulletin boards around the property. Plus, you provided me with the measurements of our parking sign (which is not new) so I’m assuming you knew where it was and should have read it. Most students around here know parking is an issue at most complexes and rules are posted for a reason. Also, just because you parked in a non-visitor spot before and didn’t get in trouble doesn’t mean your always exempt. University Parking helps us when the lots get really full to, again, provide adequate parking for our tenants, as well as avoid breaking Orem City fire code. You may have been given a break before.
In a nutshell, if we had endless amounts of land, we would build endless visitor parking spots. But, just like the rest of the student housing complexes in Orem and Provo, we don’t. So we build as many as we can AFTER the needs of our tenants are met. Second, we don’t make a dime off booting or towing and have no desire to. In fact, we regularly meet with University Parking to make sure they’re doing their job in a fair, polite manner.

Third, we don’t rejoice in poor students getting booted or towed. That’s why we VOLUNTARILY pay our security guards to go above their main security duties to help people and their visitors find parking spots, as well as work with the parking company to avoid booting or towing those people (and their friends) who follow the parking guidelines properly.

So, in the event you decide to visit Parkway Crossing again and you can’t find a single visitor parking space, simply visit the management office or call Midnight Security (their number is posted all over) - even on that “new” sign out front. They’ll be happy to help you place your car in a safe place and will work with the parking company to avoid a boot or tow. And, you might want to take precautions should you visit other student housing developments in Orem and Provo since they are under the same provisions we are and many of them use University Parking as well. I know, because I’ve lived in three student housing developments and suffered the same parking dilemmas when it came to visitors. At least at Parkway Crossing we don¹t (yet) have street restrictions like Belmont and many other places that don’t even allow street parking around the area. Hopefully this can appease some of the obvious rage you feel towards Parkway Crossing. If not, I guess you can still desire to live in hell rather than here. Being BYU Approved, that might be wiser. :-)

Thanks for your input,

The Community Art Book

Posted by sam at January 11th, 2005

Well I wasn’t going to say anything about this until it was done (and it is so far from being dong that you will forget by then).

I started a community art book.  It is just a cool looking journal with blank, unlined pages.  I basically give it to random people and ask them to fill up a page with whatever they want whether it be a poem/story, a drawing, a collage, or whatever - so long as the page is filled.

When it is completed, I plan to publish them on this journal (or perhaps start another journal for them).  You know, like a one a day thing, or something.

Anyway, I got this one picture added to my book today that I just can’t hold back because it’s so awesome.  So here it is, a sneak peak at the community art book, that will be published on here someday.

It was drawn by Steve’s friend Kristen Ripple.  She borrowed my book for like three days, and ended up drying up my pen and half of another one.  There are so many little pictures in there, I see something new every time I look at it!

UVSC can suck my left testicle

Posted by sam at January 10th, 2005

Signing up for class is a joyous occasion that comes but twice a year.  UVSC encourages those who plan on attending classes to sign up like 3 months in advance.  Nobody ever does this, of course, and UVSC has a heart attack every semester thinking all the students are going to leave because they haven’t signed up for classes by their deadline.
This year, a bunch of people actually did leave.  It looks like I will be one of those people, and I would like to tell the world (you) why.

I have been on a scholarship program at UVSC the 3 semesters I have attended.  Basically it saves me about $3000 every semester.  This is helpful because out of state tuition is about $5000.  I end up paying a few hundred dollars more than in state kids.

This program I am on is one that is in high demand.  There is a year and a half waiting list just to get on it, and there are only so many spots.  Once you’re on, however, you are on and you can complete your education without having to worry about your scholarship coming through every semester.

Well this semester someone else took the reigns of being in charge of this particular scholorship.  This new person thought it would be a wise decision to drop me from the program for no reason other than she’s an idiot.  “Well, we didn’t hear from you,” she said, “we assumed you didn’t want to be on the program any more.”

That makes perfect sense, doesn’t it?  I mean, why on earth would someone want to pay $2000 for a semester at a shitty school when they COULD be paying $5000!  “Is it so hard to see I’m registered for classes?” I asked her, “is it so hard to give someone a phone call before you drop them from a program that will cost them $9000 by the time they can get back on it?”

Yes, apparently, it is SO hard.

So it looks like I will not be attending UVSC this semester, and hopefully never again.  The stress they cause just to sign you up for classes is more than the “education” they provide is worth.  For example, this semester I registered for classes when they asked me to.  A week later the system dropped all my classes.  When I inquired as to why this would happen, I was told “Oh, just re-sign up for the classes, you were dropped for non-payment”.  Apparently waiting for my scholarships to come through wasn’t enough for them to put a hold on my payment.  Re-signing up for my classes was not an easy task, as they had now all been filled up.

This brings me to a crossroads of sorts.  If I can’t go to school here, then where am I to go?  I don’t really have a home anywhere anymore except here.  The only other school is BYU, and I don’t know if I can sink that low.

My job doesn’t pay me enough to want to keep me here, it looks like my band is going to break up, and now UVSC has dropped the ball on me one too many times.  I did apply for new job which start at $11/hr with pretty good possibilities for making more.  I guess if I get that job, I will stick around and figure something out.  If not, then I guess I have some thinking to do.

We took this trip to California

Posted by sam at January 3rd, 2005

Here are some photos from our trip to LA, and a running narration.

So we left Thursday evening at about 7:30.  Steve and I got home from work, packed our bag, and headed out the door.  Here we are in the car sometime shortly after we left.
california 002

We drove for about 3 1/2 hours and hit St. George, which is right on the south border of Utah.  We called Googlebop (Carissa) as well as our friend Bruce, but neither one was home so we hung out around town for a little bit until Googlebop got home and went to visit her.
california 005
After that we went and slept at Bruce’s place.

We got up early the next morning and headed out in the direction of California.  We decided to write and record a song in the car on the way.  I wrote the music with Steve’s input, and then he did vocals, although we never did finish.  Here is Steve in the car recording vocals and driving (don’t try this at home).

Sometime after Vegas we noticed a lot of flooding in the area.  It actually looked kinda cool.  There was a whole row of power line structures just sitting in the water and it looked really odd.  I didn’t manage to get a picture of that, but here is a fence sitting in the water.

Fast Forward.

We went to a big Mormon dance that was held in a giant pyramid at Cal State.  I found a pic of it on the net.

We met some cool people and ended up staying with our buddy Royce that night.

New Years day we went out exploring.  First we went and ate chicken and waffles at Roscoe’s.  After that we headed to the LA temple and took some pictures.

I set the timer on my camera and as I we were posing for this picture a family came walking around the corner.  We had to stand there for a few second and wait for the picture to take, so the family was looking at us like we were crazy.
california 018 Steve found himself a pineapple.
After that we went and picked up our friend Kali, who we met at the pyramid, because she had a few hours before she had to get on her plane to N. Carolina where she is going to school (but she’s from Australia).  We took her to the beach and sat around and played guitar and had a good time.

This is Kali:

We decided, after dropping her off at the airport to head home, so we got back on the road.  We hit Vegas at about 2:00am and there were still tons of people up and partyin’, but hey it’s Vegas.

We only had $10 left in our gas fund, which would not get us home.  So we took $5 each and hit the nickel slots.  I ended up doubling my five, and Steve tripled his.  Ten dollars becoming Twenty Five meant that we could now afford to drive home.

We hopped back in the car and hit St. George at about 6am.  This time we crashed at Carissa’s place.  IT was the best sleep I had the whole trip.  I don’t do well on couch’s, and for some reason Carissa has a bed in her living room.  We woke up at about 2pm, had oatmeal and hung out with Carissa for a bit and headed home.

We got in at about 7pm and went over to Jeremy and Bethia’s for cookies!

THE END

Post Script:

While at the temple, I saw some statues and thought of all my LJ friends who take such awesome pictures (Enfuego, Flyonthewall, Subconcious , etc.)  So I snapped a couple photos with my cheap little camera.  They’re supposed to be artsy and cool like those other guys’.
